The history and language in this book are rich and intriguing. Want to do some treasure hunting? Want to find some gold and jewels? This book is a reprint about treasure hunting first published in 1922. Little of the treasure discussed herein has yet to be found. Read carefully, and watch your back.

The Book of Buried Treasure Ralph Paine 9781512085471 Books

This book is a collection of stories about lost treasure, found treasure, and where some treasures might still lay buried today. Today of course being the early 20th Century, when the book was written. The author takes a long look at tales of buried treasure, the legends, the hoaxes, and the realities of those that set forth to search for buried treasure. Reading through this collection, I became aware that the author was very knowledgeable about the myth and lore of buried treasure, as well as very much up on the results of various expeditions to recover same, as well as the techniques, and technology employed.

This isn't just some tales of pirate treasure, there are tales of all types of lost treasure, mostly lost at sea, and the various adventures, and adventurers, that set out to find them. As I stated in my title, it is a mixed bag. Some of the stories read like old pirate tales, others read like a technology overview of the latest salvage and recovery techniques employed in the day. No two stories are alike, indeed the only thread that binds them is that somewhere there is a treasure to be found. All in all, I enjoyed this collection of treasure tales. As you read through the book, you gather the sense that the author has more than a skeptical view of anyone that sets off in search of some long, lost treasure. He even points out that to have a really genuine treasure hunt, there has to be a legend of great treasure, the more mythical the better, and of course, there has to be a map. Gather together your resources, obtain financing for your venture, and off you go. Somewhere along the way you do get the hint that more money has been spent chasing the allure of buried treasure, than there has ever been treasure to find. But, if you have a map, and some time on your hands; why not dig?

Very interesting. I didn't know the real story about Captain Kidd.
Pretty decent historical nonfiction book......I liked the story and the way the author wrote
This book was fairly boring and goes on and 0n quoting from various sources about how the fortunes were lost and many efforts to recover it over many years. I more or less scanned through the last half of it sampling here and there.
awesome read
It is hard for me to believe that the author wrote these stories. The prose and verbiage seem to be written in the 19th century. It seems to me that the author more likely collected the tales from out of copyright stories and assembled them into this one book. I bought this book in the edition and did not notice if the author made reference to the original printed sources. This would be my error. All of the above said, I found the stories interesting and well told. If you intend to buy this book to search for treasure, then pass on buying this book. The treasure locations described are vague at best. If you are seeking to learn more about the pirates, their background and legends, then this book is for you! Enjoy !
The book Of Buried Treasure, by Ralph Delahaye Paine gives a realistic view of the Pirates and buried treasure, and helps remove the myth that has summoned up a totally different view of many thoughts that have been considered over the years, Ralph gives a more realistic idea of how it was. James D.
A good read.
